LET'S DO IT!
MTB – The bike that goes everywhere!
MTB stands for mountain bike. In the 1970s, some Californians (USA) adapted beach promenade bicycles, cruisers, to take part in the first timed downhill competitions. Mountain biking was born! Joe Breeze, was the first craftsman to develop the first mountain bike. At the end of the 1970s, the trio made up of Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey and Charlie Kelly launched a series production of mountain bikes and democratized the discipline.
During the 1980s, the first races, like the famous Roc d'Azur in France, made their appearance. The first mountain biking world championships took place in Villard de Lans in France in 1987! This has been followed by the appearance of the sport at the Olympic Games in 1996, with medals from Miguel MARTINEZ, then the supremacy of Julien ABSALON in cross country (XC) from 2003 to 2016. Today the greatest cross-country MTB rider of all times as a new name: Nino SCHURTER. He succeeded in dethroning Julien ASBSALON by taking the highest number of World Cup victories. Fortunately, we still have very good pilots in France like Pauline FERRAND-PREVOT and Loana LECOMTE in cross country and downhill with our infernal trio: Loïc BRUNI, Amaury PIERRON and Loris VERGIER!
MTB – To each his own style
Mountain biking is a specific discipline where everyone can find what they are looking for. Depending on their tastes, needs, living environment, the rider can specialize in one type or mix them all:
-
Cross-country (XC): the only discipline to be represented at the Olympic Games, it is also the most demanding in terms of lifestyle, like road cycling. The races take place on a track of 3 to 4km (100 to 200m positive elevation) which must be done between 5 and 7 times. The rider must be at 100% of his physical capacity for approximately 1h30. The terrain has moderate technicality but the competitor must maintain his focus under the load to not make a mistake in the trajectory.
-
All Mountain / down country: leisure practice that is halfway between cross country and enduro. No pressure of result, this discipline is practiced for pleasure only.
-
Enduro: democratized in 2012 with the appearance of the enduro world series (EWS), this discipline favors descents and technical parts. The race has an average of 5 timed downhill stages. Access to the 5 stages must be done with legs strength only and is not timed.
-
Downhill (DH): the most spectacular discipline regarding the terrain harshness. The objective is simple, descend the course as quickly as possible. These events are most likely to happen in the mountains. Official events, supervised by the International Cycling Union (UCI), take place all over the world.
